Clear Debris
Before you can use your lawn mower to trim your grass, you’ll need to get rid of debris. You definitely don’t want anything to get caught in your mower’s undercarriage. Not to mention, debris can make it harder for your yard to absorb nutrient-rich products.
Prepare Your Mower
If your lawn mower has sat idle all winter, it’s not going to perform at its full potential right away. You’ll need to run through some basic maintenance tasks first. Start by removing any debris from the undercarriage. Next, check that the blade is sharp. Dull blades will rip grass and make your mower less efficient and damage your yard. Sharpen the blade so that your lawn mower can quickly cut through the grass.
If you have a riding mower, you’ll need to take a few extra steps before using your equipment. Fill up the fuel tank and change out the oil, air filter, and spark plugs. No matter which type of mower you own, it’s important to do a quick inspection to see if any problems occurred during storage.
Nourish Your Lawn
The winter can take a toll on your yard. It’s important to take some steps to revive your lawn this spring. For bare patches, plant new seeds and water them daily until they’re tall enough to be cut. Hold off on your first mowing of the spring until all of your grass is roughly the same height. After your first mowing, add fertilizer.
Cut Your Lawn
You should let your lawn mower warm in the sun for about an hour before using it. This will make for an easier start-up. As you cut your yard, try to remove about one third of the grass blade. We recommend mowing every five days for the first six weeks of spring to prevent overgrowth.
We hope these simple tips help you prepare your yard for the spring. If you have any questions or you want to look at some new lawn equipment for sale, contact Magnum Power in Lawson, Missouri.
