How to Prep Your Utility Tractor for Spring
Spring is often a busy time for farmers, and the last thing you need while trying to get all your work done is to have your important equipment breaking down or falling apart. To ensure your utility tractor is in tip-top condition for the upcoming season, we encourage you to read through our helpful maintenance tips below!
Inspect Brakes and Battery
Your utility tractor is an extremely powerful machine and, for your safety, we strongly advise checking your model’s braking system before removing it from storage. Be sure that brake pads and rotors are still in good condition, and that there are no signs of rust or leaking brake fluid. If everything checks out, you’re free to start your tractor to double-check that it’s able to stop without squealing or shaking. Just remember that, before you turn the ignition, you’ll need to take your battery off its trickle charger and re-install it into your machine. If your battery wasn’t on a trickle charger while your utility tractor was in storage, it’s likely dead, and will either need to be recharged or replaced.
Replace Fluids and Filters
Now that your battery and brakes are in working order, you’ll want to inspect and replace the various fluids that help keep your utility tractor running. This not only includes the engine oil, but the brake fluid, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid, and fuel. While we recommend completely draining and replacing your fuel and engine oil, your other fluids will only need this treatment if they’re especially dark and dirty, or if you notice condensation in the reservoirs or tubing. When replacing your fluids, we also recommend trading out your various filters, including oil, fuel, hydraulic, and air.
