Understanding the Stats
Every pressure washer dispenses water at a different rate and pressure. To find the right one, first, you’ll need to understand the basics.
The power of a pressure washer is measured in gallons per minute and pounds per square inch (PSI). Units with a higher PSI will be able to handle tougher stains and can clean faster, but if your pressure washer has a PSI that’s too high, you risk damaging the surfaces you’re cleaning or rinsing.
The water flow rate, meanwhile, largely depends on the engine size.
Class
Pressure washers can be divided into three classes. Light-duty models are highly affordable but have limited power. Their shorter hoses and lower pressure make them best suited for cleaning garden furniture, paving, cars, and so on. They’re also noisier and won’t be built as tough.
Medium-duty models are more efficient and easier to use and can handle tougher stains, but they’re also bulkier. They’re still fairly affordable, however, and can do most jobs.
Heavy-duty pressure washers are the largest and most expensive models with more powerful engines and higher pressure. These are ideal for complex and difficult cleaning jobs, from commercial properties to hardy off-road vehicles and beyond. They also tend to have some extra features, including:
- Telescoping handles.
- Heavy-duty aluminum pumps.
- Extra cleaning accessories.
- Larger wheels.
Fuel Type
Next, consider the fuel types you prefer. Pressure washers typically come with either electric motors or gasoline-powered engines. STIHL® pressure washers, for instance, come in both varieties to give you more flexibility.
Electric power washers are universally quieter and don’t pump out waste, making them better for both noise and regular pollution. They’re also lightweight and easy to transport, but because they tend to be corded tools, your range will be limited by your distance from an outlet.
Gas-powered options tend to be far more powerful and are favored for professional use, generally pumping out enough water at a high enough PSI to clean industrial and commercial spaces. Because they take their fuel with them, they’re far more mobile, but they’re also heavier, louder, and will take more maintenance.
