A Beginner’s Guide to Driving a Tractor
If you don’t have anyone to walk you through the steps, learning to drive a tractor can be difficult! To help, we’ve written up the short driving guide below. However, if you’re needing any other helpful driving tips, or even a small repair, feel free to visit us here in Lawson, Missouri to speak with one of our experienced service technicians.
Starting Your Tractor
To begin, hop into your tractor’s cab and press the clutch pedal to the floor. Turn the key in the ignition till your tractor begins to turn over. Now use your other foot to also press the brake pedal to the floor. After a few seconds, your tractor should start and you’ll want to let it idle for a few minutes. Once you and your machine are ready, you can release the parking brake and place your tractor into first gear before gently lifting your foot off the brake pedal.
Driving Your Tractor
Even though your foot is off the brake pedal, your tractor won’t move forward till you release the clutch. You don't want to accelerate too quickly, so lift your foot off the clutch pedal very slowly. Remember to make wide turns and avoid sloping hills or uneven terrain in your tractor. For your first few tries, we advise practicing in a wide-open field without any objects or animals to get in your way. Once you’re ready to stop, use both feet to slowly engage the clutch and brake pedals at the same time. If you’re done driving your tractor for the day, you can go ahead and place the machine in park and remove the key from the ignition.
